Whenever we think of reversing the root cause of any disease in functional medicine. The treatment plan always includes lifestyle modification which involves having a healthy diet. Why is it so important to have a healthy diet and maintain a healthy weight?

As we all have heard this popular phrase, “Let thy food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”. Even in the early days, food was considered the best medicine. However, now if we look back at the root cause of all the chronic conditions, it all started from having food.

Conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, cerebrovascular disease (heart disease), stroke, and many other conditions, all have the same root cause. The root cause behind all these conditions is an unhealthy diet. To have longevity and to slow down disease development it is important for us to give our body the right food. The right food that our body needs is the food that can nourish, give energy, and foster our body.

Studies show that inflammation caused by oxidative stress is also one of the most important root causes when it comes to disease progression. Our goal when having food is to reduce that inflammation and oxidative stress. There are many ways that we can do that.

We should always try to increase the number of whole foods in our diet. Whole foods are rich in phytonutrients, fiber and contain natural sugar. Our body loves whole and natural food. When it comes to carbohydrates, always opt for complex low glycemic carbohydrates. For the fat, try to put healthy fats such as olive oil. Avocados oil, nuts, and seeds, and wild-caught fatty fish. To increase the antioxidants, it is always good to consume at least 8-10 servings of colorful fruits and vegetables.

Other than eating a healthy diet, we should also have good sleep hygiene and keep active.

To have good sleep hygiene, try to block out the blue lights 2 hours before going to bed. Have a warm shower and keep the room temperature low. For exercise, it is best to do a combination of cardio and bodyweight for 30 minutes at least 3 days a week. Exercising regularly also helps in blood circulation and aids in controlling blood sugar levels.

By maintaining a healthy diet, it not only helps us to maintain a healthy weight. But it also helps us reduce inflammation in the body, keeps us away from illness, and aids in longevity. It also plays an important role in maintaining the blood sugar level and keeps our blood sugar level in check.

By combining a healthy diet and a healthy lifestyle, we can have optimal health. As we all know that to prevent is better than to treat and consistency is the key.
